Red Sorghum is a nonlinear, multi‑generational novel by Chinese Nobel laureate Mo Yan that blends family saga, war narrative, and elements of magical realism against the backdrop of rural Shandong from the 1920s through the era of Japanese occupation and into the later twentieth century. It is narrated by a grandson who reconstructs the lives of his grandparents and parents, intertwining personal memory with collective history as violence, desire, and survival play out in and around the red sorghum fields.
